Most med spas that publish a referral program give the existing patient $50, and more than half reward the new patient as well. On November 5, 2026 we read the websites of 371 med spas in 21 US metro areas. 37 of them state a reward for referring a friend. Of the 35 that pay in cash or credit, 21 pay $50. 21 of the 37 reward both people, and 16 of those give the same amount to each ("give $50, get $50"). 12 pay only after the friend's first visit. Below are the amounts, the conditions clinics attach, where they put the offer, and the rules to check before you launch one.

What we measured

We started from the 393 clinic websites in our September 2026 study of med spas in 21 US cities. 371 could be read on November 5. The other 22 showed a bot check, refused automated requests or were down, and we did not try to get past any of them. On each readable site we fetched the homepage and up to eight pages whose address pointed at referrals, rewards, specials, pricing or memberships: 2,156 pages in all. We followed each site's robots.txt and sent one request at a time per site.

A clinic counted when its own page states a reward any existing patient can earn by referring a new one. "How did you hear about us?" form options, referrals to surgeons, partner directories and manufacturer programs such as Allē's refer-a-friend did not count. 17 more clinics mention referrals without a reward open to every patient: 6 keep it for members, 2 pay in loyalty points, and 9 link to a program or mention one without saying what it pays.

How much clinics give for a referral

  • $50: 21 of 35 cash offers. Usually a credit toward the next treatment, sometimes a gift card.
  • $25: 5 clinics.
  • $100: 4 clinics.
  • Everything else: one each at $10, $30, $40, $150 and $200. The $200 offer comes from a Las Vegas clinic that gives the friend $100.
  • Not cash: 2 clinics give a service instead, one a complimentary facial "valued at $100" and one 50% off a facial during a holiday month.

Give $50, get $50: rewarding the friend too

21 of the 37 programs reward both people. 16 give the same amount to each, most often $50 and $50, with pairs of $10, $25, $40 and $100 as well. 4 give the friend less: $200 and $100, $50 and $25 at two clinics, and $50 against 20% off the first service at a Houston clinic. The other 16 programs reward only the person who refers.

A two-sided offer is easier to pass on. "My med spa will give you $50 off" sounds like a favour to a friend, while a one-sided reward can sound like the referrer is earning a commission. If your new-patient offer already gives a discount, the friend's half of the referral can be that same offer, so you do not stack two discounts on one first visit.

The conditions clinics attach

  • Paid after the friend's first visit: 12 clinics credit the reward only once the friend completes a treatment or "becomes a client". A booking alone does not count.
  • A minimum spend: 5 clinics set one, at $75, $150, $200, $250 and $300. A Nashville clinic pays $50 to each person only when the friend's first treatment is $300 or more.
  • No limit: 5 clinics say there is no cap on how many friends you can refer. One clinic that pays in points caps it at 5 friends a year.
  • An expiry date: 1 clinic says referral credit expires a year after it is issued.
  • A contest on top: 1 Nashville clinic enters anyone who refers 3 friends in a month into a draw for a $1,000 gift card.
  • Time-limited offers: 3 clinics. One runs a "Double Referral" month several times a year, with a separate page for each campaign.

The first two conditions do most of the work. Paying after the first visit means the clinic never pays for a booking that cancels, and a minimum spend stops a $50 credit being used against a $40 add-on. Write both on the page. One San Diego clinic still shows referral terms for a program year that ended in September 2019, which tells a patient nobody is reading that page.

Where clinics put the offer, and why patients miss it

13 of the 37 clinics give their program a page of its own. The rest mention it on the homepage, a specials page or a membership page, and one New York clinic runs it in a bar across the top of every page. 6 give each patient a personal link or code, which credits the right person without anyone needing to remember a name at check-in. 4 more clinics have a referral page whose text contains no reward or terms at all. The details probably load in a widget, and any browser or reader that does not run it shows an empty page with a form.

  1. One page with the full terms, in plain text: what each person gets, when it is credited, any minimum and any expiry.
  2. A link to it in the main menu or footer, labelled "Refer a friend".
  3. A personal link or code for each patient, sent in the receipt or booking confirmation.
  4. A line in the post-visit message, when the patient is happiest with the result. Our guide to turning Instagram followers into booked patients covers where that message can point.

Check the rules before you launch

A med spa is a medical practice, and paying for patient referrals is regulated. Florida's patient brokering statute, section 817.505, bars paying any commission, benefit, bonus or rebate, in cash or in kind, to induce patient referrals to a health care provider, with listed exceptions, and its wording is not limited to insurance patients. Whether a $50 credit for a cash-pay facial falls under a law like this depends on the state and the service. Ask a healthcare attorney in your state before you publish a program, and have your medical director sign off on it.

Frequently asked

Quick answers.

How much should a med spa give for a referral?
$50 is the usual amount. Of 35 med spas whose websites stated a cash or credit referral reward when we read them on November 5, 2026, 21 gave $50, 5 gave $25 and 4 gave $100. Only 6 paid more than $50.
Should the referred friend get a reward too?
Most clinics that publish a program do it. 21 of the 37 programs we found reward both people, and 16 of those give the same amount to each, most often $50 and $50. A two-sided offer is easier for a patient to pass on to a friend.
When should a med spa pay the referral reward?
After the friend's first completed visit. 12 of the 37 clinics say so on their page, and 5 also set a minimum spend for that first visit, between $75 and $300. Paying on completion means no reward is paid for a booking that cancels.
Are med spa referral rewards legal?
It depends on the state. Some states regulate any payment for patient referrals to a health care provider, and a med spa is a medical practice. Ask a healthcare attorney in your state before launching, and never tie a referral reward to a review.
